420 Europeans - Final Day

After some overnight rain, sunshine woke the competitors on the final day of the Junior EUropeans. To make up for yesterday's 'lay day' 3 races have been scheduled for today. At :45 the water looked flat with a F5 expected.

420 Junior Europeans - Tuesday

3 more races and the first discard are scheduled for today. There is already some wind, and the forecast is for it to build to around 17 knots from the southwest. Sounds like another tricky day on the race course.

420 Junior Europeans - Monday summary

3 races were sailed in the final series today. The wind built throughout the day to around 15knots. Large shifts were the order of the day and large gains (AND LOSSES) were made by many of the boats. The British team as a whole are putting in a strong showing with the day's hero being Tom and Sam who scored 9/1/1 who move from 21st to 2nd overall. Tim and Claire came 2nd in the first race and are now in 9th (one point off 6th) scoring 2/19/21. Just behind them are Peter and David in 10th having a mix of scores (highlight a 3rd) scoring 30/3/17. Imogen and Kate lie in 11th having started stongly with a 6 followed by a 10th and a 34. Jonny and Ben have dropped to 14th thanks to a 52nd in race one, but came back strongly with an 18 and a 4th. Ben and Foz had a day they would prefer to forget dropping to 15th (21/13/42) and they had to spend the afternoon/evening replacing their slot gasket. Our birthday girl, Kate, now 18 showed great pace to finish 4th in race one, but then they might have been distracted about the evening's party to end the day in 49th (4/56/48).

News 27th July

Fleet launched at 11:30. Temperature in low 30s and wind 17knots.

News Update from Istanbul (26th)

· Another 11:30 departure from the hotel, as the Practice Race wasn’t until 3pm, although GBR planned to launch at about 1:30.

· Great news – plenty of breeze – 20+ knots and cloud cover, and the temperature down to a pleaseant 30 degrees – still shorts and bikini weather, but not desperately seeking shade.

· Plenty of boat polishing and stuff in the morning and then launched at around 1:30 into 20 knots but very gusty and shifty with the wind coming off the city.

· Reports from the race course talk of ragging mainsails in the gusts, even on super-windy settings, warm water (sailing in board shorts and spray tops) and quite a few capsizes. Some of the course angles were a bit dodgy – to be discussed at the coaches meeting tomorrow morning.

· After some après-sail food at the club (melon, bananas, biscuits and drink) boats packed-up and bus back to the hotel.

· Quick showers and then out to an Italian restaurant nearby for pizza and pasta, and then back to the hotel for debriefs and a review of the Sailing Instructions ready for tomorrow.

· Plan is to leave the hotel at 9:20 on Friday morning ready for three races, first start at 12:00. Forecast is around 17 knots and 30 degrees.

Other comments

· A few people are suffering with upset stomachs, but nothing affecting the whole team, so we hope it won’t be too drastic – Imodium and dioralyte at work!

· Need to be careful about leaving stuff around the dinghy park in the evening, as a couple of bags were taken during the opening ceremony, but now resolved.

· Pleased that we’re not staying in the bunk rooms at the club – although they’re very convenient and well air-conditioned, they look very crowded and have limited facilities.

· Launching is quite restricted down a concrete-walled slip, only allowing one boat to launch at a time, so care needed not to hit the walls, especially in ferry wake, or when all come ashore at once.

· Flights sorted for the open sailors – three races a day for two days to split into gold and silver – yellow is Rusdens and Peter Gray, green is Ben & Tim, and I think Scots and Tom & Sam are together, meaning that Jonny and Ben are by themselves. Girls have only one fleet, doing two races per day.

That’s all for now – looking forward to some good racing tomorrow…

News Update from Istanbul (25th)

· Left the hotel at 11:30, giving the sailors a lie in after days spent travelling and measuring, with a plan to go afloat at 2pm after a “fully-rigged” measurement check at 1:30.

· Clear blue skies and 40 degrees in the shade meant that the dinghy park was pretty inhospitable. The sailors borrowed about a dozen “CocaCola” sun umbrellas from around the swimming pool and used these to create some shade – it looked a bit like a F1 grid just before the race starts!

· The wind didn’t oblige – it was absolutely flat calm, so the afternoon was pretty draining, waiting for the measurer to come and inspect our boats. It was always ”you’re next, five minutes….” But seemed to take hours – we were eventually checked (taking about an hour) at about 5pm. To be fair to the measurers, they had a huge task working in a very hot area (a bit like an underground car park) from 9am to 7 pm for two days.

· Evening food was provided, but only after the opening ceremony (due to start at 7.30pm), so the team had supper together at the club at 7pm. The opening ceremony was well organised but quite lengthy, and started an hour late at about 8.30, finishing at 9:40! The sailors then went to the open air disco and food on the harbour front, but we had agreed to leave at 10pm, so they didn’t have long there!

· All in own rooms by about 10:40!

News - 26th July

At 15:00 local time the sailors are preparing for the practice race. Our local contact is reporting 20-25 knots, temperature down 10 degress to around 30 deg and some cloud cover. (It now only feels like a warm hair dryer rather than a hot one).

News - 25th July

The opening ceremony was held around the pool at the Yacht Club. Today has been another very hot day and unfortunately NO wind making sailing impossible. The weather is due to get cooler by around 10 degrees to a comfortable 30 deg. We are hoping that the wind will pick up for the practice race tomorrow.

News update from Istanbul (25th July)

Just some brief notes on the activities :

· Breakfast at the hotel – plenty of choice, good mix of cereal, fruit, cheese, pastries.

· Left the hotel at 9:15 for the 20 minute trip to the yacht club on the team coach (40 seater and nicely air-conditioned)

· Morning spent boat-bimbling, changing mainsheet strop arrangements where necessary to comply with new rules interpretations etc. Very hot and sunny – about 36 degrees and no shade in the dinghy park, so frequent breaks for bottled water (provided free).

· Club has a posh restaurant, a lovely outdoor restaurant and a food area by the dinghy park. Also swimming pool (salt water), gym etc, so more of a sports and social club with some sailing. General view is that it’s a pretty good base, but just hot!

· The whole area (hotel, club etc) is much more up market than we expected – on our route from hotel to club we pass M&S, McDonalds, Starbuks, but not dominated by western brands. Many nice cafes and restaurants, and the “wealth” goes back quite a few streets from the waters edge, rather than just being 50m deep.

· Also not much evidence of strong religious position re clothing etc, but obviously lots of mosques with minarets along the skyline etc.

Please bring the following documentation

a) A photocopy of the photo page of your passport (so that we have a copy in case you lose yours!)
b) A copy of your travel insurance policy certificate
c)Your boat measurement certificate, including a copy of the full measurement certificate if you have one.
d) A copy of your boat insurance certificate.
e)£10 in sterling notes (and Scottish notes are not acceptable!) to buy your Turkish entry visa on arrival in Istanbul .
f) The team budget includes €10 for evening meal and €10 for shore side food and drink after sailing. However, on the water food and drink is up to each individual sailor (as you each have your own preferences) so bring sufficient cash for on-water food, plus some spending money for traveling and any trips we might do on the lay-day etc.

Entry visas

A visa is required for British nationals to enter Turkey. British citizens may obtain a multiple entry visitor's visa valid for 90 days at the port of entry on payment of ten pounds sterling in cash (Scottish currency is not accepted).
