News Race Report Final Day Arthur Henderson and Matthew Currell sailing 8561 Bad Influence are this year’s Cadet National and Open Champions. The Tamesis/Parkstone pairing’s score of 21 points was 6 ahead of runners-up Alex Young and Jack Hardie from Frensham Pond, sailing 8513 Di Maggio. With first and second places already decided, today’s tenth and final race of the series saw four crews come to the start line in with a chance for third place. Josh Flack/Naomi Flack (8434) on 47 points, John Page/Alexander Page (8521) on 49, George Ayre/Nick Sutton (8542) on 58 and Hugo Pullen/Guy Pullen on 71 were all in contention as a further discard could be taken with the completion of the race. The lead was held at the first Windward by Zoe McBride/Rhos Hawes (8533) from Sophie Dingwall/Josie Gummer (5000) in second and Charlie Impey/Jack Wilson (9047) in third, with a useful gap to the rest of the fleet. Of the contenders for third place overall, John Page/Alexander Page (8521) were best placed in 13th, with George Ayre/ Nick Sutton (8542) one place behind. Josh Flack/Naomi Flack (8434) were some way off the pace, along with Hugo Pullen/Guy Pullen (9668). By the Leeward mark, Sophie Dingwall/Josie Gummer (5000) had taken the lead, with Alex Young/Jack Hardie (8513) in second place and James Hayward/Alex Warrington (9631) in third. George and Nick headed John and Alex by four places, with Josh and Naomi a further seven behind. The lead changed hands over the course of the next beat. Alex Young/Jack Hardie (8513) moved to the front and held on to take the gun from Sophie Dingwall/Josie Gummer (5000) in second and James Hayward/Alex Warrington (8631) in third. George Ayre/Nick Sutton (8542) finished seventh and John Page/Alexander Page (8521) finished 17th, but their margin over Josh Flack/Naomi Flack (8434) who finished 20th, was insufficient to stop the Parkstone brother and sister from taking third place overall. Race Report Day 5 21st August 2008 The winners and runners-up are now known ahead of Friday’s final race. Two further races were sailed today, with overnight leaders Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell sailing 8561 winning both. Alex Young/Jack Hardie in 8513 achieved a fourth and a sixth to secure the runners-up spot. Lighter winds prevailed today, which saw some of the younger crews at the top of the fleet. Race 8 The fleet were away at the second time of asking under a Black Flag. Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561) led at the Windward mark, with Erin Williams/Toby Fitzgerald (9225) in second, Oliver Palierakis/William Palierakis (9005) in third and Emily Kinver/Katie Kinver (8511) in fourth. At the end of the first run, Arthur and Matthew maintained their lead with Emily and Katie ahead of Oliver and William. These positions were maintained until the final run, when the leaders briefly surrendered first place to initially Emily and Katie and then Jessica Quinlan/Chris Sycamore (8407), who had been steadily improving throughout the race. However, order was returned on the final leg with Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561) winning their first race of the event, with Jessica Quinlan/Chris Sycamore (8407) in second, John Page/Alexander Page (8521) in third and Emily Kinver/Katie Kinver (8511) in fourth. Race 9 Abigail Croft/Katie Hinde (9378) led the fleet at the Windward mark from Will Matthews/Harriet Ayre (8847) in second, Jessica Quinlan/Chris Sycamore (8407) in third and Emily Kinver/Katie Kinver (8511) in fourth. By the Leeward mark, George Ayre/Nicholas Sutton (8542) and Hugo Pullen/Guy Pullen (9668) were challenging the leaders. Emily and Katie were holding the lead into the final run, but were overtaken by Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561), who had recovered from 11th place at the first Windward. A tight battle ensued right to the line with Arthur and Matthew taking the gun for their second victory of the day, with Emily and Katie in second and Hugo and Guy Pullen in third. (22/08/2008) Race Report Day 4 20th August 2008 Two further races were sailed today in a Force 5 Westerly wind. Conditions favoured then experienced crews and around a quarter of the fleet either stayed ashore or withdrew. Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561) continue to hold first place overall. The Tamesis/Parkstone pairing have a four point margin over second placed Alex Young/Jack Hardie (8513) from Frensham Pond, with Josh Flack/ Naomi Flack (8434) from Parkstone in third. Race Alex Young/Jack Hardie (8513) achieved their second victory of the event, following on from their success the previous afternoon. They led at the Windward mark from Josh Flack/ Naomi Flack (8434) in second and Hugo Pullen/Guy Pullen (9668) in third and together pulled away from the main fleet. These positions were maintained for the duration of the race. Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561) recovered from 13th place at the first mark to finish fourth. Race 7 This was probably the tightest race of the event to date. There was little margin between the top fifteen boats at the first Windward mark and close sailing continued as the race developed. Hugo Pullen/Guy Pullen (9668) had established a small lead by the final Windward mark and held on to this to take the gun. Second place went to James Hayward/Alex Warrington (9631) in a close finish with Alex Young/Jack Hardie (8513).
Race Report Day 3 20th August 2008 Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561) retain their overnight lead following a further two races, although their margin over second placed George Ayre/Nick Sutton (8542) has been reduced from seven points to two. Race 4 The fleet launched into a strengthening wind and rolling sea and on reaching the course area, it was decided to restrict racing to Gold fleet competitors. Tim Carter/Henry Stone (9374) led at the Windward mark from Jonathan Kimber/Jonathan Van Ingen (8440) in second, Josh Flack/ Naomi Flack (8434) in third and George Ayre/Nick Sutton (8542) in fourth. A close race ensued between the leaders and it was not until the final beat that Tim and Henry re-established their lead to take the gun from George and Nick, with Josh and Naomi in third. Overnight leaders Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561) finished fourth. Race 5 From the Committee Boat end of the line, Alex Young/Jack Hardie (8513) led the fleet into the Windward mark, with John Page/Alexander Page (8251) in second and Will Kennedy/Loni Lilienthal (8539) in third. These positions were maintained until the final Leeward run, when a squall went through the course. A capsize ended Will and Loni’s hopes of a top-three finish and Alex and Jack took first place from the Page brothers with Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561)in third. After 5 races, the overall positions are as follows:
Race Report Day 2 18th August 2008 Racing has been abandoned for the day due to adverse weather conditions. (19/08/2008) Race Report Day 1 17th August 2008 Three races were completed today, each using the Outer Loop of a Trapezoid course. The first start was delayed until Noon to allow the wind to fill in and racing commenced in a Force 4 South-Westerly wind with strengthened as the afternoon progressed with Force 5 gusts. Race 1 The Pin End was a popular place for many of the experienced crews who stayed on the left-hand side of the course. James Hayward/Alex Warrington (9631) lead at the first mark, from George Ayre/Nick Sutton (8542), Josh Flack/ Naomi Flack (8434) and Arthur Henderson/Matt Currell (8561). James and Alex lead throughout the race, winning by a minute at the finish. The following group traded places as the race developed, with Arthur and Matt taking second place from George and Nick. Race 2 The fleet were away at the second attempt and the Pin End was again the place to be. At the first mark, Jonathan Kimber/Jonathan Van Ingen (8440) led from Will Matthews/Harriet Ayre (8847), with both holding these positions through to the finish. Tim Carter/Henry Stone (9374), George Ayre/Nick Sutton (8542) and Arthur Henderson/Matt Currell (8561) challenged for the minor places, with Tim and Henry taking third. Race 3 The race started under a Black Flag and congestion at the Pin End was such that both James Hayward/Alex Warrington (9631) and Tim Carter/Henry Stone (9374) found themselves over the line. John Page/Alexander Page (8251) led from the first mark to take the gun from Arthur Henderson/Matt Currell (8561) in second and Josh Flack/Naomi Flack (8434) in third. Cadets Arrive In Torquay 16th August 2008 This year’s Cadet National & Open Championships are being held at Torquay from 16th to 22nd August. One hundred Cadets have entered the event, which is being hosted by Royal Torbay Yacht Club. Torquay was a regular venue for the Cadet Class until the Championships moved to Weymouth some five years ago and a warm welcome has been extended to all competitors. The entries include four crews which represented GB at this month’s World Championship, together with a large number who raced in the Promotional Regatta. Absent are Joanna Freeman, who helmed GBR 9575 into second place in the Worlds, Alex Horlock, who finished in fifth place in GBR 9382 and Tom Kinver, who was placed eighth in GBR 8511. Joanna and Tom are competing in the 420 Nationals at Pwllheli and Alex will be at the 29er Nationals at Weymouth. Today’s Practice Race was cancelled due to Southerly winds gusting up to 30mph across Torbay. The wind is forecast to swing around to the South-West by tomorrow morning with speeds of 10-15 mph, gusting into the low twenties. (17/08/2008) Welcome To Torquay
