Welcome to Burghfield Winter Optimist Open

Weather Forecast

The forecast for the Open on Saturday is for 20-22 knots with gusts over 30 knots all day.

However, Burghfield is a sheltered venue where we typically see around 60% of the forecast wind. We have a good number of safety boats in place and our current view is that the event will go ahead for all fleets. We may need to change the format for the regatta fleets to adapt to the conditions on the day but we will do all that we can to give them an opportunity to experience some stronger winds whilst maintaining high safety standards.

We are monitoring the forecasts closely and will make a decision this afternoon to be posted here by 18:00 on Friday.

Weather Update

Having monitored the forecasts all day, we can see no significant increase in the wind strength. Therefore, we are planning to go ahead with sailing for all fleets. Of course this will be reviewed again tomorrow morning, and the format of sailing may be changed to accommodate the conditions but we would like, if possible, to offer some racing for all sailors.

Change to Notice of Race

Date Posted 20th February 2017

6.4. Changed to: The main fleet will be raced in flights, broadly in line with IOCA (UK)’s Major Event Instructions. Full details will be contained in the Sailing Instructions.

6.5. Add: The Regatta fleet will be further split to provide a medium size course for those able to race with limited assistance and a separate smaller “Coached Regatta” course for those very new to racing.

7.1. Change “Regatta Fleet Briefing” to “Briefings for all fleets”

7.2. Is deleted (There will be a briefing for Main Fleet)

Coached Regatta Fleet

Due to the fantastic number of entries that we have received for the Regatta fleet at the Burghfield Open we have split the Regatta fleet in to two fleets. This will allow us to accept the entries from the waiting list without making the start line or the racing too chaotic or overwhelming.
The aim is to provide an even smaller course with additional support in the form of coaching for the younger and less experienced sailors.

The traditional regatta fleet will remain on a mid-sized course with assistance rather than overt coaching being offered during the racing.

The Main fleet is not affected.

All three fleets will race on a separate course areas, each with their own committee boat.

If you have already entered and would like to change fleet please email David as soon as possible, at dbsailing@gmail.com and we will move you across.
