Final Sailing Instructions

A final set of SIs has now been posted. These contain a minor correction to the previous set and add some alternative courses and an alternative schedule.

Although the courses look complicated, they derive from two basic patterns: A square course which we are likely to use if the wind is across the lake and an extended S course more suitable for use when the wind is across the lake.

CHANGES TO THE N.O.R

We have made some changes to the NOR to clarify which fleet you should enter. This has been made necessary due to the large interest that has been shown in our Open Meeting. We have now moved entrants to the fleets relevant to the criteria set by the NOR. If you have any questions please do contact us.

The criteria for the three fleets have been selected very carefully in order to provide the best possible racing for all of the sailors who enter.

The lake at Burghfield is large enough to provide great courses with good size beats with most wind directions. If the wind is directly across the lake the length of the beat is reduced and better racing is achieved by having fewer boats on the start line. Racing in flights over a one day event is far from satisfactory for the competitors or for the race management team. Therefore, three fleets, split along squad lines to ensure good, close peer-group racing in the favored option.

We are aware that many sailors may want to sail in a higher fleet to gain experience and to stretch themselves. However, we ask that you respect the criteria specified in the Notice of Race and enjoy the opportunity to have some close racing with the sailors that you train with.

Optimist Gold Fleet - Any members (or selected or previous members) of the IOCA National or Intermediate squads (RYA or IOCA) must enter the Gold Fleet. Members of the IOCA Development Squad may enter Gold Fleet.

Optimist Silver Fleet Any members (or selected or previous members) of the RYA Optimist zone squads must enter the Silver Fleet only. Those in the IOCA Development Squad may enter Silver Fleet. Any sailor who has sailed in at least one major IOCA event in main fleet (that is the Inlands, National Week or End of Season events) and is currently sailing regularly in Main Fleets may also enter the Silver Fleet.

Optimist Bronze Fleet Any sailor who has some experience of open events and is not a current or previous member of an IOCA or RYA squad as defined in the Gold and Silver Fleets and does not meet the additional criteria for the Silver Fleet should enter the Bronze Fleet.

Optimitst Regatta Fleet Any sailor with little or no experience of open events should enter the Regatta Fleet. This will be a coached fleet and will probably be sailed on a separate course to the Gold, Silver and Bronze Fleets.

Thank you for your cooperation
